Apple has just announced new features on App Clips.
This is probably not the most spectacular announcement from Apple on the occasion of this WWDC 2022 . The Cupertino company has however decided to make a change to Apps Clips, its feature launched in 2020. Remember that these are extracts from an application that allow you to access a useful part of the latter without have to download it entirely.
And precisely, the Apple brand has announced the increase in the maximum size of App Clips from 10 to 15 MB. Concretely, this could encourage developers to make their applications more accessible to this option, and encourage its users to get started.
Apple executives believe in the return to grace of App Clips
Wiley Hodges, director of product management and marketing, told the Apfelfun podcast:
With App Clips, we wanted something you could download very quickly in the moment to get a very targeted piece of functionality when and where you need it. This is what motivated the size limit in the first place. Turns out if you can now download 15MB super fast, we know that’s going to open up a lot of new possibilities for developers, maybe frameworks they want to include that they couldn’t include before.
Nothing is gained, and the leader recognizes it himself, because for the moment, the App Clips functionality has not obtained the expected success: ” When we talk about the future of App Clips, I think that we had the great misfortune to launch ourselves in the middle of a pandemic that caused people to stay at home and these kinds of experiences were not at the top of their priorities. (…) What we’re seeing now is a renewed interest and energy around App Clips and we’re really excited to see what’s next. »
