Only certain models are affected, due to a several-year-old problem.

The batterygate saga continues. After having already been sanctioned in several countries, Apple is facing a new legal action which aims to obtain compensation for all users affected by this major incident which occurred in 2017. For the reminder of the facts, the update to iOS 10.2.1 then made some iPhones whose battery was getting old.

This time, it is in the United Kingdom that the file opens. The plaintiff, Justin Gutmann, is represented by the firm Charles Lyndon and wishes to obtain 750 million pounds sterling (which is equivalent to nearly 900 million euros) to then be distributed among the twenty-five million victims mentioned. These are customers who have invested in an iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, first generation iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6 or an iPhone 6 Plus . Unfortunately, French consumers are not affected: only British residents are.

Mobiles up to half as powerful

According to the prosecution, Apple would have with the installation of iOS 10.2.1 made some iPhones up to 58% less efficient than before. It would then be a question of setting an example, as Gutmann points out, who sees it as a means of “ reassessing the revenue model ” of “ dominant companies ” behaving in this way. An argument that is of course reminiscent of that of the most determined legislators of the moment .

In France , when the same case had been examined by the courts, the offense of planned obsolescence had not been retained by the judge. It must be said that the lawyers of Cupertino have enough to defend themselves with not only a substantial budget but also the support of lobbyists at the highest level .

No more worries with iOS 15

Fortunately, since these problems arose, many disgruntled customers have been able to take advantage of Apple ‘s free battery replacement program . With this, the comparisons which show that the most recent versions of iOS are gaining autonomy compared to those installed as standard when the iPhones are delivered are not uncommon.

If you have a problem with endurance on your own device, this may be due to the use you have made of it. Under certain conditions, the batteries can indeed lose performance. To learn more, information about the health of this key component is now available in the native Settings app .
