Apple has made a crazy bet. Dominate the computer chip market in 18 months.

During the traditional WWDC held this Monday at Apple Park in Cupertino, the Apple brand did not resist the idea of limiting itself to software. In the midst of announcements concerning iOS 16, iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura, Apple has therefore slipped a small bombshell with the arrival of two new laptops, the 13-inch MacBook Air and Pro… M2.

The latter are therefore entitled to a brand new chip from the “Apple Silicon” series launched less than two years ago with a 13-inch MacBook Air and Pro already at the time. The new version of this computer therefore benefits from an improvement in its power of nearly 20% according to Apple figures.

Qualcomm wants to regain its number 1 spot

Estimates that make M2 the most powerful chip on the market to date, which does not fail to make the competition react. On the side of Cristiano Amon, the CEO of Qualcomm, the answer was not long in coming. From this Wednesday, the boss of the Californian company, which notably produces the 5G modems for the latest iPhones, ensures that his company is able to regain the lead in this market, and create a better product than that of Apple.

In a statement to Reuters, the entrepreneur said he “believes that his company is capable of having the best chip on the market”. In the rest of his press release, he refers in particular to three new recruits, who worked for Apple on the M1 chip and who are now under the orders of Amon for Qualcomm.

Weighty recruits to tip the scales

Recruits include Gerard Williams, who was chief development officer for the iPhone’s “A” series chips. If the latter are different from the “M” chips of Macs, Qualcomm hopes that Williams’ experience will be able to help the firm regain market share.

Today Apple is, according to its own competitors, the company that produces the most powerful chips. Qualcomm, but also Intel hopes to be able to recover the place that was theirs before the arrival of Apple in November 2020.
