Comparison of screens

The screen of the iPad (9th generation) is almost the same as that of the iPad (8th generation). Indeed, the two slabs offer a diagonal of 10.2 inches. On the other hand, the iPad 2021 is the only one to offer True Tone technology. This has the advantage of adapting the colors of the display according to the surrounding light. Moreover, the definition is the same: the iPad 9 and the iPad 8 both offer 2,160 by 1,620 pixels for a density of 264 ppi.

Comparison iPad 9 vs iPad 8 (screen): no real difference to decide between the two iPads.

Design: iPad 9 vs. iPad 8

Difficult to make a comparison between iPad 2020 and iPad 2021 with regard to the appearance of the two devices… Indeed, we are here on equivalent dimensions with simply an iPad 9 a bit lighter than the iPad 8 in Wi-Fi version. Fi, or three grams heavier with mobile data. The dimensions are the same. The borders are also present around the screen with a very wide ratio, on iPad (9th generation) as on iPad (8th generation). On the other hand, on the color side, there is a difference: the iPad 9 is no longer available in gold, but only in silver or space gray.

Comparison iPad 9 vs iPad 8 (format): equality.

Performance of iPad 2021 and iPad 2020

Both iPad 9 and iPad 8 are powered by 3GB of RAM. It is certainly little, but sufficient for the solicitations that are those of the general public. Where there is a useful difference for our comparison between the two models, however, is on the processor side. Indeed, if the iPad 2020 integrates an A12 Bionic chip serious in seven nanometers, the iPad 2021 does better since it is entitled to the A13 Bionic chip which is also found in the iPhone 11, in the iPhone 11 Pro and in the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

The two chips each consist of six cores. If we do a quick comparison between the power of the two components, however, we quickly realize that the iPad (9th generation) is – theoretically – faster than the iPad (8th generation). But on a daily basis, you will probably not notice the difference as the software is optimized to consume little and deliver without a hitch.

iPadOS 15

And precisely, let’s come to the subject of the software. The iPad 8 is powered by iPadOS 14. The iPad 9 offers iPadOS 15 natively. But the iPad 202 can also install this version, so there is no real difference between the two. Except perhaps on the support side… Indeed, it is no longer a secret that Apple stops supporting its iPads after a certain period of time. Fortunately, this is counted in years. So the 5th generation iPad that was released in March 2017 is still compatible with iPadOS 15, five years later. So it’s a safe bet that the 9th generation iPad will be supported until at least 2024, but the iPad 8 will stop at 2023. Important if you want to benefit from the latest features at all times.

Let’s now do an informed comparison of some features found in iPadOS 15 but not in iPadOS 14 (installed on iPad 8):

widgets

With iOS 15, users can now place widgets directly on the home screen. The iPad 9 also include the basic Locate widget, which therefore allows you to find your “ personal effects directly from the home screen ”. You should also know that the iPad (9th generation) offers the rotation of these elements natively when you switch it to landscape mode.

Ratings

The Notes app is integrated in the iPad 8 and in the iPad 9. But with iPadOS 15, it now offers the possibility of creating tags and mentioning other Internet users to collaborate.

FaceTime

SharePlay is a feature that is also found natively on the iPad 2021. On the iPad 2020, this will require the update to iPadOS 15. Concretely, this option makes it possible to share content with several people, for example to listen to music together or watch series with Apple TV+.

Comparison iPad 9 vs iPad 8 (software): a big yes for the iPad 2021, a small regret for the one-year delay of the iPad 2020.

Picture differences

There is no difference between iPad 9 and iPad 8 if we focus on their rear camera. Thus, iPad 2020 and iPad 2021 both have an 8 MPx sensor on the back with ƒ / 2.4 aperture, digital zoom up to 5x and HDR mode for shots with more vibrant colors.

Interesting point to note for this comparison: the front camera of the iPad (9th generation) is on the other hand much better than that of the iPad (8th generation). Indeed, while the 2020 iPad is content with a fairly basic FaceTime HD camera, the 2021 iPad is entitled to an ultra wide-angle for selfies! The photos also go from 1.2 MPx on the iPad 8 to 12 MPx on the iPad 9. If the aperture is the same on both iPads (ƒ / 2.4), only the new one offers a centered frame and video recording at twenty-five frames per second.

Comparison iPad 8 vs iPad 9 (photo): a point for the excellent portraits of the iPad 9.

Audio and Connectivity

The iPad 9 and iPad 8 each offer two speakers to listen to your music. If, however, you are in a relatively calm environment, then we invite you to use the Bluetooth 4.2 integrated in the devices (no Bluetooth 5.0, too bad) to come and pair AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, a HomePod… The choice is free as the accessories for iPad are numerous at Apple.

Note that depending on the iPad 2020 or iPad 2020 chosen, you will have 4G or not. No 5G on the menu, but Wi-Fi on all models with Lightning port for charging and Smart Connector for connecting keyboards.

iPad 9 vs. iPad 8: battery life

The ninth-generation iPad and the eighth-generation iPad both offer ten hours of maximum autonomy in web browsing with Safari over Wi-Fi. Via the mobile data network, however, this autonomy increases to nine hours. During our review of the iPad 9 , we also noticed that it charged for quite a long time. It’s quite a shame, when you know that the competition has been offering fast charging for a long time thanks to USB sockets.

Prices of the different models

Now let’s move on to the last part of this comparison, the one you’ve all been waiting for: it’s time to talk about prices.

  • 389 euros for the iPad 9 Wi-Fi space gray with 64 GB of internal storage
  • 389 euros for the iPad 9 Wi-Fi silver with 64 GB of internal storage
  • 559 euros for the iPad 9 Wi-Fi space gray with 256 GB of internal storage
  • 559 euros for the iPad 9 Wi-Fi silver with 256 GB of internal storage
  • 529 euros for the iPad 9 Wi-Fi + Cellular silver with 64 GB of internal storage
  • 529 euros for the iPad 9 Wi-Fi + Cellular space gray with 64 GB of internal storage
  • 699 euros for the space gray iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular with 256 GB of internal storage
  • 699 euros for the silver iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular with 256 GB of internal storage

And the iPad 8, then? It was available from 389 euros when it was released, but Apple is ending its production. Its colors are gold, space gray and silver and the price does not change accordingly. On the other hand, the maximum storage capacity is less than on the iPad (9th generation): it is 128 GB.
